Since 01.01.2022, EDA GmbH has been the service provider commissioned by system operators for the operation, hosting and implementation of the energy data exchange as well as the EDA Commissioner pursuant to E-Control Austria SoMa 5.

2021
Takeover of management by newly appointed managing directors. This year was marked by the establishment of an administrative infrastructure and the transfer of operational tasks from ARGE EDA, which was liquidated at the end of the year.

2019 – 2020
The upcoming developments in the energy market, in particular the creation of new market roles and foreseeable decentralisation processes, led to the strategic decision by ARGE EDA to set another milestone by establishing EDA Energiewirtschaftlicher Datenaustausch GmbH (EDA GmbH). The official founding meeting took place on 20.07.2020 in the midst of the COVID-19 lockdown. EDA GmbH was initially managed by two interim managing directors. During the summer of 2020, the User Portal went live, providing an easy way to participate in the energy data exchange. At the outset, it was specifically geared to the requirements of Community Generation Facilities.

2017 – 2018
With the revision of the “Other Market Rules, Chapter 5”, framework conditions for market communications, E-Control Austria (SoMa 5), the EDA infrastructure for energy data exchange was enshrined in law in 2017 and it was determined that the costs were to be borne by the electricity and gas system operators. Since 2018, the data has been reported to the regulator via EDA. This period also saw the expansion of ARGE EDA to include the transmission system operator for electricity and the market area manager for gas.  Thus, ARGE EDA covered both the transmission and the distribution network areas as a controlling body for the electricity and gas sectors.

2014 – 2016
Connection of further energy utilities to the data infrastructure, such that by 2016, almost 100% of the system operators and energy suppliers were connected to EDA. In 2016, the Austrian implementation of market communications also attracted the attention of the European Commission (EC), when EC staff saw in person how the EDA infrastructure was functioning and experienced in real time in Vienna how the EC’s objectives might be implemented without using a central data hub.

2013
Ponton GmbH, a company with a high level of technical expertise and reliability, was chosen as the partner for implementation and technical operation of the Energy Data Exchange from the very outset. The EDA infrastructure went live in July 2013. At that time, 90% of market participants were already connected.

2012
Innovative individuals in the field of electricity distribution system operators first developed the idea for a uniform, decentrally organised, electronic data exchange for the Austrian electricity and gas sector. This initiative resulted in the creation of the Energy Data Exchange Working Group, whose German acronym is ARGE EDA, on 15.11.2012. The founding members were the nine provincial distribution system operators, four municipal distribution system operators and the Association of Austrian Electricity Utilities ([German acronym:] VÖEW).
